Oi... the internet.
What a wonderful place, to get flamed, to meet serial killers, waste half
of your life and of course, donwload illegal software.
MYTH & REALITY
Firstly, the internet is a good place to run into trolls and downright obnoxious
people. In person, stupid and obnoxious people tend to stay quiet because
they A) have to deal with you in person or B) are overwhelmed by the intellegence
of the average person. On the internet, that isn't so. Because they don't have
to deal with you, "trolls" as they're so lovingly called, love to come
onto newsgroups, into chatrooms and of course your inbox and taunt the
hell out of you. There are ways of dealing with this problem.

Don't argue with them

Don't waste your time with them

Pretend they're not there, they
want attention, so don't give it to them

Get anti-virus protection

Don't read e-mail from them
-
NEVER open an e-mail attachment
from someone you don't know

Report them to some kind of
authority (Note: Don't waste too much time doing this, even if they lost
their ISP they can get another one easily)
Secondly,
serial killers and wackos in general. Is the internet a nice place to meet crazy
people!? Oh yeah! But so is your neighborhood bar, grocery store &
work place. Don't be stupid about the internet, but don't be paranoid about
it either. Don't put your phone # or address on-line, or any other contact
information that can come back to haunt you. When giving such information
out, always give it out in e-mail, never in a newsgroup or a chatroom.
Screen the people you talk to you if you plan to meet them in person, and
ALWAYS meet in a nice public place, perferably with a friend.
Wasting your life on the internet? STOP! Get out of your chair and excersize,
staring at your monitor forever can hurt your vision, you can get carpal
tunnel being on this thing all the time. There's more to life than the
internet. Get out more often!! Even I do!!!
Illegal software, aka warez. Oh yeah =) This is the perfect place to find
free software in an abundance that can't be compared. Just be careful where
you're downloading from, and if you post the stuff, be careful who you
talk to. These companies do come after people now and then, software piracy
is serious business, even if most people get away with it. One word of
warning : Some companies make it a special point to deter theft, even to
the point of crashing your comptuer. Learn who they are, and avoid their
software.
