Brandon's Ramblings
An excerpt from "My thoughts
5/21/99"
Famous statement : People
are basically good.
Do you agree or disagree?
I disagree. People are born selfish, as every other creature in reality.
Observe the actions of an infant. Every action it takes is an action of
selfishness because it is unaware of the needs of others. The baby does
not cease being self centered, it is merely taught over time to respect
others and this self centered attitude takes a new form. What the infant
is taught is called morals. Morals are the abstract values placed on the
intent and or result of an action. People become good when they follow
their morals, and people become evil when they reject and break those values.
These values differ from culture to culture, what is good to some may be
evil to another.
Self preservation is an act of selfishness, placing oneself above others.
Stealing is an act of self preservation. The person is acting on the belief
that they need to steal to either preserver their level of life or to please
some lust for stealing. Suicide is an act of self preservation. The person
feels that they cannot mentally or physically survive their challenges,
and choose an easy way out. They value the easy way more than the difficult
way they may have to traverse, as well as the value they have in other
people’s lives. People saving each other from harm is an act of selfishness.
These people have a lust for playing hero, and save others. While this
is good, it is the value they place on their own ego, or the value others
place on the person that drives the act. This is the same urge that drives
me to “toy” with crazy drivers on the freeway, although it possibly deters
such insanity, my real reason no matter how hard I try to convince myself
otherwise is that I feel better about myself having obstructed the maniac
rather than let them go on their way. So I value the ego boost more than
I value the risk I’m taking with my life. People drive like idiots because
they value their time more than the lives of the other people occupying
the road. People ignore these drivers because they feel their lives imperiled
when they don’t. They feel their lives are more valuable than the lives
of the other people who may fall victim to the crazy drivers.
Nice to know no matter how you cut it we’re all just a bunch of selfish
@#$@#$.
Till next time,

Brandon K. Montoya (or is it the other way around?)
