From the earliest days of the New Orleans, prostitution was dead common.
The fact it was a major port city helped this industry stay busy, sailors
and frontiersman from all areas came to see the madams and their "girls"
here. In an effort to clean things up after the Louisiana became a part
of the United States of North America, a law was passed banning prostitution
from the first level of any building. Well, those balconies the French
Quarter is famous for came well into play. Just before the end of the century
a politician by the name of Alderman Sidney Story passed legislation moving
all prostitution further back in the French Quarter. To his chagrin, this
newly desginated area was named after him. To this day prostitution remains
legal, and all of the ladies working there must have licenses and monthly
doctor's visits. |
