After the Louisiana Purchase in eighteen hundred and three, New Orleans
became an "American" city, thus the city was flooded with Americans from
different states, all looking to settle in New Orleans. Being the snobby
bunch they were, the white creoles kept their neighborhoods shut to the
Americans, forcing them to populate the are of land between Canal St. and
the end of the French Quarter, this was the founding of the Garden District.
As the years came to pass, it became the business center of New Orleans,
it received its name from the many palatial houses that had beautiful
gardens in the front. Nowadays its still home to many a beautiful and
vintage home, but the majority of the big business has moved past Canal
St. to the Central Business District. |
